Raja Oedipus

Premieres Saturday, June 14 2025 at 5:00 PM

DUE TO EXTENUATING CIRCUMSTANCES–
THIS PERFORMANCE HAS MOVED TO 5 PM.

What makes art truly feel alive?  Through the power of community working together into creating something greater? Is it through the investigation of the project being tackled? Or….is it tapping within the performer’s gift, their divine calling?

These are the questions that kept me satiated with hunger in exploring the two very different forms of theatre into one stage: a drama gong Balinese fusion of the Greek tragedy, Oedipus Rex. Despite two very distinct cultures, deeper analysis between the cultures did we discover one very striking similarity: both tethered heavily through its spiritual divinities, and how those beliefs are shared to the world through their artistic practices. Art was much more than artistic expression, it was a vehicle for spiritual enlightenment: early Greek culture to honor their Olympian Gods, Balinese culture to pay respect to their Hindu deities. This was a time of celebration, a time to commemorate the power of collaboration and what we can achieve as we stand united.

Sophocles’ Oedipus Rex is perhaps one of my favorite plays. What I love about this tragedy is much more than the drama and the challenge it provided to the performers and I in reliving the worldview of the play…but rather the vulnerability of the hubris of man. How humanity is delicate, raw, yet ever enduring.

In this world of the play where fate pulls the strings from the shadows, what does it truly mean to be arbiters of our own fate? What does it truly mean to live, or die, in our own terms?
